From 1st January 2025, physical visa documents were replaced with electronic visas (eVisas). An eVisa is an online record of immigration status and any associated conditions to enter or stay in the UK.
The previous method of physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRP) is no longer valid. This means that anyone who previously had a BRP must now access their eVisa online. The eVisa enables the holder to generate a share code for employers to use to check immigration status of the employee. This is a welcome change for employers who can more easily identify their employee’s immigration status.
BRPs are currently still being accepted as evidence of permission to travel during the transitional period to the new online system, but this is currently expected to end on 31st March 2025. In time, eVisas should simplify and streamline immigration status checks.
