Contact UsAt BBS Law, we understand that family disputes can be emotionally challenging and legally complex, that being said, our team of expert family mediation solicitors provides a range of dispute resolution options tailored to your needs.
Choosing to resolve disputes outside of court can offer significant advantages, including reduced stress, greater confidentiality, and cost-effectiveness, so find out more here about mediation and collaborative law and how these methods allow families to retain control over the outcome, rather than leaving crucial decisions to a judge.
Mediation is a structured process in which an independent, professionally trained mediator facilitates discussions between separating couples. The goal is to help both parties reach a mutually agreeable resolution regarding the likes of financial settlements, child arrangements, or other family law matters.
Family mediation is a voluntary process that promotes open communication and cooperation, unlike court proceedings, which can be more difficult on the family, mediation instead encourages a more constructive approach to conflict resolution.
No case is the same, especially when it comes to family law. Family disputes and discussions are incredibly complex and require a solicitor that is ready to carefully deal with the situation at hand.
This might include cases such as, but not limited to:
Our family mediation specialists assist clients with these sensitive issues with care and expertise, ensuring that all discussions remain constructive.
Resolving family matters outside of court can provide several benefits, including a less adversarial approach, enhanced confidentiality, and often quicker resolutions. Mediation allows separating couples to address their concerns in a structured and neutral setting, with the guidance of a trained mediator.
At BBS Law, our mediation services help families through disputes in a way that prioritises communication and cooperation. We provide professional support to ensure that discussions remain constructive, focusing on key areas such as financial settlements, child arrangements, and parenting plans for those that are seperated.
Our experienced mediators facilitate negotiations, helping both parties reach practical agreements tailored to their circumstances. By encouraging open dialogue and working together to reach a mutual understanding, we aim to achieve resolutions that work for everyone involved.
For many, mediation offers a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to court proceedings. It provides separating couples with greater control over their decisions, ensuring that outcomes reflect their specific needs rather than being imposed by a judge. At BBS Law, we are committed to making this process as smooth and effective as possible for our clients.
An independent mediator will help a couple to resolve the practical issues that have arisen following the breakdown of their marriage or relationship.
Mediation can deal with any practical issue that the couple would like to address. These may range from questions about where their children should live and how often they should see each parent, to detailed financial issues.
Generally speaking, the couple will meet for sessions alongside the mediator or mediators. Further, some couples prefer the co-mediation method, which can allow for both a male and female mediator to be present.
There are a number of stages within mediation before an agreement can be achieved. Initially, it is necessary to collate the information and establish trust between parties. The mediators need to understand the information provided before being able to assist the couple in attempting to find a solution.
An agreement reached through mediation is voluntarily entered into by both parties, with the terms often finalised over a series of meetings. If necessary, this agreement can be made binding via a court order and a member of BBS Law’s family team will be able to assist clients with this.
Our mediators are experienced ‘all issues’ mediators, meaning they can mediate about financial arrangements and children arrangements.
Our collaborative divorce lawyer services span wide, as we can offer flexible approaches with mediation being able to take place via Zoom or in person so we can fit around your personal arrangements.
We can also offer co-mediation where we charge a combined fee so you get the expertise of two skilled mediation solicitors for less than their individual rates.

Collaborative law is similar to mediation. However, instead of having a single independent adjudicator, both people are represented by a solicitor or family lawyer throughout the negotiations. At the first meeting, both people sign a formal participation agreement not to go to court. If that changes later, both solicitors will normally withdraw from the process, and both will need to seek new legal representatives.
The purpose of collaborative law is to keep both parties talking. Your legal experts will guide you through the process to prevent ‘stalemates’ and to help you both reach a satisfactory resolution. We have family dispute lawyers who are fully trained in collaborative law and happy to work with you and the other party’s solicitor to ensure the process goes smoothly.
Yes, we offer 1 lawyer 2 clients as part of our services. You can find out more about that here.
Usually mediation meetings are attended by each person and the mediator. You are able to each take legal advice outside of the joint meetings. However, it may be appropriate and helpful to have a joint mediation session with you both having your solicitors present too. This is called Hybrid Mediation and we can discuss this with you both as to whether this is appropriate or necessary as suitability is assessed on an individual basis.
Mediation is voluntary and you both must agree to it in order for it to proceed.
It is important to think about whether you feel you are able to speak freely and respectfully to one another. The success of your mediation relies on you both being engaged, honest, and respectful. If there is ongoing domestic abuse it is unlikely that mediation will be the best process for you at this time.
Our mediators will be able to address any concerns you have and they will screen for any safeguarding issues when they speak to each of you in the confidential individual meeting before the joint sessions begin.
Normally each person pays their own costs of the mediation meetings but a couple are able to come to a different arrangement about this depending on what works for them and their financial circumstances.
There is also a Mediation Voucher Scheme available for couples that mediate about children arrangements (this can be in addition to financial matters). This entitles each couple to £500 towards their mediation fees. Our mediators will discuss this and payment options with you both before the mediation begins.
We take the time to get to know our clients and their businesses, and we work collaboratively with them to achieve their goals.

Needing a lawyer in a different country was a bit overwhelming living in the US. Gemma Barnhurst was lovely to work with. She put me at ease and provided good counsel. I am glad I was referred to BBS Law by a friend and would recommend them to anyone else needing similar services.

BBS Law represented a father who has sole care of the parties’ two-year-old son. The mother had returned to Taiwan, her home country and did not have consistent contact with the child. Given the father was in possession of the…
