There has been increasing concern about a number of hip replacement patients complaining of physical pain and mental impairment arising from part-cobalt hip implants.
The Daily Telegraph has been running a campaign* to bring this issue to the attention of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) who have now launched an enquiry into these implants.
According to the campaign about 5,000 patients in Britain are thought to have been given “modular neck” hips made with a cobalt part, which have proven to have high failure rates, putting anyone with them at increased risk of poisoning.
Our consultant, Stephen Silverman, is acting for one such patient whose life has been dramatically altered as a result of the physical and mental symptoms she has suffered. She states such symptoms have taken the prime years of her life from her and changed her life for ever with every day being a struggle as she cannot undertake even the most basic tasks.
Our client and others are calling for a recognition by the MHRA of the problems arising from such implants, the need for such patients to be diagnosed and regularly monitored for elevated cobalt levels and action to be taken to undertake revision surgery where required as a matter of urgency.
At BBS Law we can assist in advising with respect to injury and accident claims and would welcome discussing any concerns you may have.
